We’ve heard a lot about mercury fillings, but did you know that your old mercury, or silver, filings emit mercury vapor for the entire time they are in your mouth? Mercury is a poisonous gas, and must be treated with appropriate care and safety for the patient and the dental staff.
We follow the guidelines and are members of the IAOMT , the only dental organization that both recognizes the dangers of mercury vapor and strongly urges the safe removal of it. And, while the FDA is studying the controversy over amalgam fillings, Europe has banned the material for safety reasons. I am a firm believer in offering the safest, most biocompatible restorative materials available to our patients at all times. To me, those materials are porcelain, zirconia, and composites.
