Our experience in the field of dentistry in the Olympia area has taught us that your child’s “baby teeth” are as important as your adult teeth. How can that be?
As early as 6 months of age, baby teeth can begin to emerge. Though tiny, they will help with chewing and speaking. They also hold space in the jaws for the permanent teeth developing under the gums.
The American Dental Association recommends brushing your child’s teeth with a little water as soon as the first tooth appears.
Once your child is old enough to brush on its own, supervise this activity to be sure they use only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and avoid swallowing it. Teach them to spit out remaining toothpaste as well as the rinse water. As soon as two teeth touch, parents can use floss or an interdental cleaner to remove plaque where a toothbrush cannot reach. Brushing is recommended twice daily.
Our dentistry office in the Olympia area recommends your child’s dental visit at an early age. We can care for any tooth decay or other problems, such as possible adverse effects due to thumb-sucking. Ask about our dental sealant procedures too.
