Teeth Whitening

While teeth whitening products are widely available in the toothpaste aisles of retail stores, they vary widely in quality - and none work as well as professional whitening. Store products contain more "fillers" designed to keep them shelf stable and fewer active bleaching agents. Their messy strips or flimsy one-size-fits-all trays also make them harder to use.

Teeth whitening won't work on fillings or on other dental restorations like crowns and veneers. When possible, you should whiten teeth prior to receiving restorations. Then your dentist can match the color of your restoration to your whiter shade. A filling that doesn't closely match the color of your teeth is less likely to stand out in your smile than a veneer or crown.

Professional teeth whitening is considered safe when performed or recommended by a dental professional. The products are designed to whiten teeth while minimizing irritation to your gums and enamel.

Teeth whitening works best on stains caused by foods, beverages, tobacco, and aging. Some discoloration caused by medications, injury, or changes inside the tooth may not respond as well and could require other cosmetic treatments.

Some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity after whitening treatment, but it usually disappears within a day or two. Your dentist can recommend products or treatment options to help reduce sensitivity if needed.

Professional whitening uses stronger, clinically tested whitening agents that typically produce faster, more consistent results than over-the-counter products. It is also customized to your needs for greater comfort and effectiveness.

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to reduce stains or discoloration are good candidates for professional teeth whitening. A dental exam can determine the cause of discoloration and help identify the treatment that's best for your smile.
